Could poor ventilation cause my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment two months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent odor coming from the bedroom where my kids sleep. The AC unit in that room runs almost constantly, and yet it doesn’t seem to clear out all the musty smell. My children have been coughing more frequently lately, especially at night when they’re sleeping. Could this be due to poor air quality or some issue with the ventilation system?

Could poor ventilation cause my kids' coughing? Yes, it sure could. In the UAE, specifically Dubai, we experience a climate that can be quite humid during certain times of the year, which means moisture is more likely to accumulate inside homes, leading to issues like musty odors and even mold growth. Mold thrives in moist conditions and can release spores into the air, causing respiratory irritation - something your kids might be experiencing.

The persistent odor you've noticed from their bedroom could indeed be due to inadequate ventilation. Even though your AC unit runs almost constantly, it may not fully address the moisture build-up or the musty smell if the system isn't designed properly for the space. In Dubai, where buildings are often air-tight to keep cool temperatures and energy costs down, proper ventilation can sometimes get overlooked.

Moreover, the increase in coughing at night is a notable symptom. The air quality during sleep is especially important as your children spend their most vulnerable hours breathing in this environment. Nighttime coughing could be due to a combination of factors - not just poor air quality but also allergens and irritants that might be present in higher concentrations when the house cools down.

I'd recommend calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. They can assess your home's ventilation system, check for mold growth, and provide solutions to improve air quality. If you suspect issues with the AC unit, consider having it checked by a certified HVAC technician who can ensure it’s operating efficiently.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial in Dubai, as the climate can exacerbate problems like mustiness and mold. Regular checks and proactive maintenance of your home’s ventilation and cooling systems will help keep the air fresh and healthy for your family to breathe.
