Could poor ventilation cause my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

Since moving into our new apartment two weeks ago, we’ve noticed a persistent dry cough and headaches, especially when spending time in my bedroom. The air feels particularly stuffy, even with the window open slightly. Could this be due to poor ventilation or some other indoor air quality issue?

Could poor ventilation cause my symptoms?

Absolutely, your concerns about the indoor air quality of your new apartment are valid. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we often experience extreme temperatures and humidity levels that can make it challenging to maintain good indoor air quality (IAQ). Poor ventilation is indeed one of the primary culprits when it comes to health issues like coughing and headaches.

In Dubai, regulations require buildings to have adequate ventilation systems. However, if your apartment isn't designed with sufficient airflow or if the current system isn’t functioning optimally, this could certainly lead to stale air that's rich in pollutants. Pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from furnishings and cleaning products, mold spores, or dust mites can all contribute to respiratory issues like a dry cough and headaches.

The sensation of stuffiness even with the window slightly open may indicate inadequate ventilation. In such cases, it's important to assess whether your home has proper air exchange rates that meet standards set by the Dubai Municipality. They recommend at least 0.3 changes per hour for residential buildings to ensure adequate air quality.

Given these points, it would be wise to call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. Our team can help identify any issues and provide solutions tailored to your apartment's specific needs. In the meantime, try using exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, open windows whenever possible, and consider portable air purifiers to improve IAQ until you can address the underlying ventilation problem.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial for health, especially when spending long hours at home. Addressing this issue now could prevent more serious health concerns down the line.
