Could poor ventilation cause our symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment two months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent stale smell lingering in our living room, especially during the evening when the air conditioner is on. My kids have been complaining of itchy eyes and runny noses, and they seem more congested than usual. We’ve lived here for 2 years, so this is new. Could there be an issue with the ventilation or should I look into indoor air quality filters?

Yes, poor ventilation can absolutely lead to the symptoms your family is experiencing. In Dubai and UAE generally, the climate can be quite harsh, and many people rely on air conditioning systems during the hot months. However, if there's not enough fresh air exchange or if the HVAC system isn't properly maintained, it could result in stale indoor air that might irritate your kids' respiratory systems.

In Dubai, regulations like EN 13779 specify minimum ventilation rates for residential buildings to ensure good indoor air quality (IAQ). If your apartment doesn’t meet these standards, or if the current system isn't functioning as intended, it could explain why you're noticing a change in IAQ since moving back into the unit.

Ventilation issues can also lead to moisture buildup, which is a common precursor to mold growth. Mold spores are known allergens that can exacerbate respiratory problems and eye irritations. Given your kids' symptoms, it's important to rule out both poor ventilation AND any potential mold issues.

I would recommend checking the following:
• The condition of your air conditioning unit and filters
• Whether there’s a proper balance between fresh outdoor air and recirculated indoor air
• Any signs of moisture or condensation that could indicate underlying problems

If you're unsure, it's best to call in professionals who can conduct an inspection. They will be able to assess the situation accurately and recommend appropriate solutions.

For assistance, you can contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (66537) or email them at hello@saniservice.com. They are experts in this field and can provide a thorough analysis of your apartment's indoor air quality.

Remember, addressing these issues early could prevent more serious health concerns for you and your family.
