Dirty AC coil causing our respiratory issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha has been making a weird damp, mildew smell for the last couple of months, and lately my wife and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats. I finally pulled the unit apart this weekend and the evaporator coils are absolutely covered in thick black dust and grime. Could this dirty coil be the cause of our respiratory issues and is a standard cleaning enough to fix it, or do we need a more serious sanitizing treatment?

Yes, the dirty evaporator coil is very likely the cause of both the smell and your respiratory symptoms. In Dubai's climate, AC units run constantly, creating a cold, damp environment on the coils where dust and organic debris accumulate. This mixture becomes a breeding ground for mould and bacteria, which are then blown directly into your living space.

A standard cleaning is the essential first step to remove the physical buildup of dirt and the microbial colonies living on it. For a case with visible thick growth and health symptoms, a more thorough antimicrobial treatment is often recommended to address the biofilm that a basic clean can leave behind. This is a common issue in Al Barsha villas due to high ambient dust and year-round AC reliance.

You should have the entire system, including the drain pan and ductwork, inspected by a professional. They can assess if the microbial growth has spread beyond the coil itself. Reputable providers will offer before-and-after testing to verify the cleaning's effectiveness, which is a good way to ensure the problem is resolved and not just temporarily masked. Resolving this should alleviate the airborne irritants causing your stuffy noses and sore throats.
