Dusty AC smell making us sick in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah villa has been making a sort of dusty, damp smell for the last couple of months, and ever since, my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats. I’ve changed the filters but it hasn’t helped, and I can see a bit of black dust around the vent. Is it possible that the ducts themselves are the problem and are making us sick, and how do I find a reputable company in Dubai to clean them properly?

Yes, it's very possible your ducts are contributing to the issue. In Dubai's climate, year-round AC use combined with high humidity creates an ideal environment for mould and dust mites inside ductwork. The black dust around the vent is a strong visual indicator of accumulated debris, which often includes microbial growth.

The symptoms you describe—stuffy noses and sore throats upon waking—are commonly linked to breathing air contaminated with mould spores and fine particulate matter from dirty ducts. Since changing the filters didn't resolve the musty smell, the contamination is likely deeper within the system.

For a reputable company, look for providers that offer a detailed inspection with a camera scope to show you the actual condition inside the ducts before any work begins. They should be able to explain their cleaning process, which must include agitation of debris and powerful vacuum extraction with a HEPA-filtered unit to prevent contaminants from spreading into your home. Avoid companies that only offer spray-based treatments without mechanical cleaning.

The most credible companies will provide before-and-after evidence, such as photos or video from the internal inspection, and may suggest subsequent air or surface testing to verify the reduction of contaminants. In Dubai, verifying their credentials with Dubai Municipality or following DHA guidelines for indoor air quality practices is a good step. For your situation, a full system inspection and targeted cleaning of the contaminated ducts is the most logical course of action.
