How often should I clean my air ducts?« Back to Previous Page

The air conditioning in my villa has been running nonstop since the summer heat kicked in, but lately, I've started to notice a weird, dusty smell coming from the vents in the living room. I’ve lived here in Dubai for about three years, and this is the first time I've had this issue. I've also seen a bit more dust collecting on surfaces than usual, which makes me worry about the air quality. Given the amount of dust in the air here, how often should I be getting my ducts cleaned to prevent any future problems?

In the UAE, particularly in Dubai where dust and sandstorms are prevalent, maintaining indoor air quality is essential for health and comfort. Given your experience of a dusty smell and increased dust accumulation in your villa, it’s crucial to address these issues promptly.

Air ducts can collect dust, allergens, and even mold over time, especially in our climate where air conditioning systems run continuously. The general recommendation for duct cleaning is every 3 to 5 years, but this can vary based on several factors, including the presence of pets, the frequency of air conditioning usage, and any renovation activities that may introduce more dust and debris into your home.

If you notice persistent odors, increased dust, or if you have recently experienced water damage, it’s wise to get a professional inspection sooner rather than later. In cases of significant contamination or health concerns, it might be necessary to clean your ducts more frequently.

Additionally, it's important to consider the UAE's regulations regarding indoor air quality. The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) sets standards that address air quality in buildings, and adhering to these can help ensure a healthier indoor environment.

When scheduling a cleaning service, make sure to choose a reputable company that follows industry best practices. A thorough cleaning should include not only the ducts but also the blower and the cooling coils.

To maintain optimal air quality in your home, also consider implementing regular maintenance of your air conditioning system, including changing filters every 1 to 3 months, depending on usage and the presence of dust and allergens.
