How quickly must I clean sandstorm dust for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I'm worried it's because of the dust that's settled everywhere after that big sandstorm last week. The living room and both bedrooms have a fine layer of grit on every surface, even though I've been running the AC non-stop. How quickly do I need to get a deep clean done to make it safe for them, or is a regular wipe-down enough for now?

Clean the settled dust as soon as practically possible, ideally within a few days. While the dust itself is an irritant, the main concern is that it can be resuspended into the air every time someone walks through the room, continuously exposing your children's respiratory systems.

Start with a thorough wet-wiping of all hard surfaces—floors, window sills, and furniture—to prevent the dust from becoming airborne again. Avoid dry dusting or sweeping, as this will just push the particles back into the air. Vacuum upholstered furniture and carpets with a HEPA-filter-equipped vacuum cleaner to properly capture the fine particles. Pay close attention to the AC vents; wipe the exterior grilles with a damp cloth, as a significant amount of dust will have been pulled into the system.

Even after cleaning visible dust, your AC unit has likely ingested a large amount of fine particulate matter. This can clog filters and coat internal cooling coils, reducing efficiency and potentially circulating dust and allergens. A professional AC deep clean is strongly recommended after a major sandstorm event to restore indoor air quality. This is not just about dust; the moisture on the coils can bind with the dust to create a habitat for microbial growth, especially given Dubai's high humidity. For families with children experiencing respiratory irritation, this step is often necessary to resolve the issue completely.
