How to dry and treat damp carpet under AC drip?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom AC unit in my Jumeirah apartment has been dripping water onto the carpet for a few days and now there's a dark, damp patch that feels mushy underfoot. I'm worried about mold starting to grow, especially with how humid it's been. What's the best way to completely dry this out and treat the area myself before I have to call a professional?

The immediate priority is stopping the AC drip and removing all moisture. Turn off the AC unit at the circuit breaker to prevent electrical hazard and further water flow. Soak up as much standing water as possible with towels, then use a wet/dry vacuum for a more thorough extraction.
In Dubai's humidity, passive air drying is insufficient and will likely lead to mould growth within the carpet pad and subfloor. You need active drying. Run a powerful dehumidifier in the closed room continuously, and place a high-velocity floor fan directly over the area to circulate air. This process typically takes 24-72 hours to reach the subfloor. The carpet must be lifted to dry both sides and the underlying pad; if the pad is foam, it is likely ruined and must be replaced. Once completely dry, the area must be treated for microbial growth. Scrub the subfloor and the back of the carpet with a solution of white vinegar or a certified antimicrobial cleaner. Avoid bleach, as it is mostly water and will not penetrate porous materials to kill mould roots. Given the description of a "mushy" feel, moisture has likely saturated the subfloor. This is a serious case where professional inspection is strongly advised. Unseen mould growth inside the wall cavity or under the floor is a common outcome in such scenarios. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to verify the dryness deep within the structure and perform ATP testing to confirm the absence of active biological contamination. The root cause of the AC drain line clog should also be diagnosed and remediated to prevent recurrence. |
