How to fix musty closet smell in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet has had this weird, damp smell for a couple of weeks now, and it’s starting to get on my clothes. I’ve checked for any obvious leaks after the last humid spell in Jumeirah, but I can’t find the source. Is this something I can fix myself with a dehumidifier or cleaning, or do I need to call in a professional to check the walls?

That damp smell in your closet is likely microbial growth, a common issue here due to our high humidity levels, especially after a humid spell. The source is often hidden condensation or a small, undetected leak that has allowed moisture to accumulate within the wall or under the flooring.
Start by removing everything from the closet and inspecting for visible mould, which can appear as fuzzy patches or discoloration. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a diluted vinegar solution, which can help kill surface mould. A portable dehumidifier placed nearby can help reduce ambient moisture, but it won't address the root cause if moisture is trapped inside the structure. If the smell persists after a thorough cleaning and dehumidifying, the source is likely internal. In many Dubai villas and apartments, a musty smell from a specific area indicates hidden dampness, potentially from a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct, or capillary rise from the foundation. These issues require a professional inspection with tools like a moisture meter or thermal camera to locate the exact source behind the wall before remediation can begin. Without identifying and stopping the moisture intrusion, the smell and potential mould problem will simply return. |
