How to fix sewage smell from kitchen sink drain?« Back to Previous Page

My kitchen in my Jumeirah villa has started giving off a really bad sewage smell every evening around 6 PM when everyone in the area is cooking and using water. It’s strongest near the sink and it’s making the whole ground floor unpleasant. We’ve had the building’s maintenance check the pipes but they couldn’t find a blockage. Could this be a problem with a dry drain trap somewhere, and how can I find and fix it myself?

A recurring sewage smell at the same time each day, especially near a sink, strongly suggests a dry P-trap. This is the U-shaped pipe under your sink designed to hold water, creating a seal that blocks sewer gases from entering your home. In Dubai's arid climate, water in infrequently used drains can evaporate quickly, breaking that seal.

Start by running a steady stream of water from the tap into the drain for at least 30 seconds to refill the trap. Do this for any floor drains or secondary sinks you don't use daily, as these are common culprits. If the smell persists after refilling the traps, the issue may be a partially blocked vent pipe on your roof. These vents equalize pressure in the drainage system, and if obstructed by sand or debris—common here—they can cause siphoning that pulls water from your P-traps.

For a persistent smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can conduct a smoke test to pinpoint the exact location of the breach or use a camera to inspect the vent pipes for blockages. Given that you're in a villa, the problem could also be with the main building sewer line or a faulty seal at a pipe connection that only becomes apparent under specific pressure conditions, like peak evening water usage.
