How to keep dust out of my Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the dust settling on everything in our Jumeirah villa. I feel like I'm constantly dusting the ceiling fans and shelves, but a fine layer of sand just reappears a few hours later. What's the most effective way to keep the dust out, especially during these windy summer months? Should I invest in a specific type of air purifier or is there a better cleaning routine I should be following?

Dust infiltration in Dubai villas is a multi-source problem, primarily from external sand and internal sources like shedding AC duct linings and dead skin cells. The most effective strategy is a layered approach focusing on sealing, filtration, and cleaning routines.

Start by improving your villa's envelope. Ensure all windows and doors are properly sealed; even small gaps let in significant fine dust. Check for weep holes in windows—these are necessary for drainage but can be covered with a breathable mesh filter to block dust. For the intense summer winds, keep windows closed during peak dust hours, typically midday.

Your HVAC system is your first line of defense. Replace standard AC filter rolls with higher-grade pleated filters (MERV 8 or higher, if your system can handle the airflow restriction). Change them every 4-6 weeks during summer. A professional AC and duct inspection is wise, as damaged or contaminated duct linings are a major internal dust source.

Incorporate a two-step cleaning routine. First, use a vacuum with a certified HEPA filter—this captures the fine silica dust instead of recirculating it. Follow by wet-mopping hard floors; dry dusting simply redistributes particles. For ceiling fans and high shelves, use an electrostatic duster that traps dust instead of flicking it into the air.

A standalone HEPA air purifier is highly effective for bedrooms and living areas, especially for children with sensitivities. Place units in rooms where the family spends the most time and run them continuously on a low setting. Look for a unit with a high Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) for dust.

Given your children's coughing, a professional indoor air quality assessment can identify specific particulate levels and sources, which is more targeted than general advice.
