How to prevent mold in humid Dubai closets?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started getting these black spots on the leather shoes and bags I keep stored in there, and everything feels damp. It’s been like this since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago, even though the AC is always running. I'm worried it's going to ruin my stuff and spread. What's the most effective way to prevent mold from growing inside closets here, especially with our crazy humidity?

Black spots on leather in a humid closet are a classic sign of a mold issue, driven by Dubai's high ambient humidity and the microclimate an enclosed space creates. The most effective prevention is controlling moisture and air circulation, as mold cannot grow without them.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all affected items from the closet to prevent further damage and potential spread. Leather items will need professional cleaning to salvage them. Wipe down the entire interior of the closet with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, but avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces.

For long-term prevention, focus on three key strategies:

1. Improve Airflow: This is critical. Keep closet doors ajar whenever possible, especially when the AC is running. Avoid over-packing clothes, as this restricts air movement. For large or problematic closets, a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like those containing calcium chloride crystals) placed inside can make a significant difference.

2. Control Humidity: Your AC removes humidity as it cools. Ensure it's set to a sufficiently low temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to effectively dehumidify the air. If the apartment still feels damp, a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom is a strong investment during the humid summer months.

3. Inspect for Leaks: The damp feeling warrants a check for a hidden source. Feel the walls for cold spots or moisture, which could indicate a condensate drain line leak from the AC unit inside the wall or a minor plumbing issue. This is a common problem in apartments.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or you discover a persistent damp patch, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify hidden condensation issues or leaks that aren't visible to the naked eye, which is often the root cause in climate-controlled spaces.
