How to remove closet mold and prevent it from returning?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom's walk-in closet has started smelling really damp, and I just found a small patch of black mold on the back wall where my shoes are stored. This is our first summer in the Meadows villa and I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped in there. What's the best way to clean this off safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back, like a dehumidifier or something else?

Good afternoon. Discovering mold in your walk-in closet is a common yet concerning issue here in Dubai, especially in villas in communities like The Meadows. The combination of our extreme outdoor humidity and year-round air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials, often leading to condensation in poorly ventilated spaces like closets on exterior walls. Here’s a practical approach to manage this.

For the small patch you've found, safety is paramount. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach. Instead, use a solution of white vinegar or a commercial mold remover approved for indoor use. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, this addresses only the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source.

Prevention is critical. Firstly, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open periodically and ensure AC vents are not obstructed. Consider installing a wireless hygrometer to monitor humidity levels; you want to maintain them below 60%. For a closet, a small, portable desiccant dehumidifier can be very effective at passively absorbing excess moisture. Also, ensure your villa’s AC system is serviced regularly, as a faulty unit can contribute to high indoor humidity.

It is important to note that according to Dubai Municipality guidelines, while minor surface mold can be cleaned by occupants, any signs of persistent moisture or widespread growth warrant a professional assessment. What you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg, and the wall cavity may be affected.
