How to remove closet mold and prevent it in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet has started to feel really damp and I just pulled out a couple of my winter jackets to find small patches of mold on them. I live in an older building in Bur Dubai and this has probably been developing over the last few weeks of humidity. What’s the best way to get rid of the mold for good and stop it from coming back?

Closet mold in Bur Dubai's older buildings is common due to high humidity and often inadequate ventilation. The dampness you feel is a clear indicator of elevated moisture levels, which mold spores use to colonize.
First, address the immediate problem. Remove all items from the closet. For washable fabrics like jackets, a thorough wash with a mold-killing detergent is essential; sun-drying them afterwards is highly effective in our climate. Wipe down all closet surfaces—shelves, walls, and rods—with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning agent. Allow everything to dry completely before returning items. Preventing its return requires controlling the humidity source. This is the critical step. In many older Dubai buildings, closets on exterior walls can be a cold spot where moisture condenses, especially with constant AC use. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar periodically and not over-packing it. A moisture-absorbing product like silica gel can help, but it's a temporary measure. For a permanent solution, you must identify why that space is damp. The most common causes are poor ventilation or a hidden issue like a minor plumbing leak in the wall or a compromised seal around windows allowing humid air in. A professional inspection can pinpoint the exact source, which is often not visible to a resident. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the root cause behind the wall. Once that is resolved, the mold will not return. |
