How to remove closet mold and prevent moisture in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch and we run the AC constantly. What’s the best way to clean this safely and, more importantly, how can I stop the moisture from building up in a closed closet like that in Dubai's humidity?

The black mold you've described in your closet is a common issue in Dubai, primarily due to the high ambient humidity and the constant cooling from your AC unit. When cold air from the room meets the warmer, stagnant air and surfaces within a closed closet, it creates condensation, leading to dampness and ideal conditions for mold growth on organic materials like dust, cotton, and even the wall itself.

For safe removal of a small patch, first ensure you are wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Do not attempt to dry brush the mold, as this will release spores. Lightly mist the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) to suppress spores, then wipe it clean with a disposable cloth. Discard the cloth immediately. For porous items like clothing, professional laundering is advised. However, if the wall feels damp and the mold has reappeared, this indicates an ongoing moisture issue that cleaning alone will not solve.

The most critical step is addressing the moisture source. In a sealed closet, you must improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar for a few hours each day. Consider installing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a moisture absorber like DampRid inside the closet. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and that the drain lines are not clogged, as this can cause excess humidity. Setting your AC to a slightly warmer temperature (e.g., 23-24°C) can also reduce the drastic temperature differential that causes condensation.

For a recurring or larger problem (over 1 square meter), a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact moisture source and assess the mold's extent. Improper handling can spread contamination. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the cause and provide a compliant remediation plan as per UAE standards.
