How to remove damp sock smell from AC unit?« Back to Previous Page

My AC unit in the bedroom has started blowing a faint, damp sock smell every morning when it first turns on. It only lasts for about ten minutes and then it's gone, but it's strong enough to wake me up. This started happening about two weeks ago and seems to be getting worse. What's the best way to clean the unit myself to get rid of this smell for good?

That damp sock smell is microbial growth in your AC's evaporator coil or drain pan, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and constant AC use create a wet, dark environment where bacteria and mould thrive, particularly the species Streptomyces, which produces that distinct musty, geosmin odor.
For a temporary fix, you can try cleaning the accessible parts. Turn off the AC's power at the circuit breaker. Remove the front panel and vacuum any visible dust from the intake grilles and the evaporator coil if you can see it. Then, use a coil-safe foaming cleaner spray from a hardware store, following the product instructions to foam and rinse the coil. Pour a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) down the condensate drain line to help clear any biological sludge causing the smell. However, this is often a superficial solution. The smell's quick disappearance after startup indicates the growth is deep in the system, likely on the coil's backside or in the drain pan, which are inaccessible without disassembly. DIY cleaning rarely addresses the root cause, and the smell typically returns. Persistent damp sock odors, especially those that are strong or worsening, usually require professional intervention. A proper clean involves dismantling the indoor unit to access and steam-clean or sanitize the entire evaporator coil and drain pan. For a lasting solution, it's best to have a certified technician inspect and clean the unit, as improper handling can damage the sensitive coil fins. They can also ensure the drain line has proper slope to prevent water from stagnating. |
