How to remove mold and control closet humidity in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom walk-in closet in Jumeirah has started to feel really damp and I’ve spotted a few patches of mold on a couple of my leather handbags. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help in that enclosed space. What’s the best way to get rid of the existing mold and what can I do to control the humidity in there for good?

Closet mold in Dubai is common due to the high ambient humidity, especially in enclosed spaces with poor air circulation. The first step is to address the existing mold on your leather goods. For non-porous items like handbags, use a solution of 60% water and 40% white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner with a fungicide. Wipe the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry completely away from the damp area. For porous items or extensive growth, a professional restoration service is often needed to prevent permanent damage.

To control humidity in the closet for good, you must improve air circulation and reduce moisture. Running the AC in the main bedroom is insufficient for an enclosed walk-in. Install a small, standalone dehumidifier inside the closet, emptying it regularly. Alternatively, a small, quiet exhaust fan vented into the room can help. Ensure the closet door is louvered or left slightly ajar to allow conditioned air from the room to enter.

The root cause is likely a combination of the room's airtight construction and the high latent load in Dubai's air. Your AC may be cooling the air but not effectively removing its moisture. For a permanent solution, a professional assessment is recommended to check for potential issues like negative air pressure, blocked drainage, or an undersized AC unit that cannot handle the humidity load. Companies with microbiological testing can identify the mold species and provide data-driven remediation plans, which is a standard practice for verified providers here.
