How to remove mold from closet and salvage clothes?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah. I’m really worried it’s spread to our expensive coats and bags. What’s the fastest and most effective way to kill this mold and salvage our belongings?

First, move all clothing and bags out of the closet immediately to prevent further contamination. Inspect each item carefully; non-porous materials like leather bags can often be wiped down with a suitable cleaner. For porous fabrics like wool coats, a professional dry cleaning service experienced with mold remediation is your best bet for salvage.

For the mold on the wall, the root cause is almost certainly condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall—a very common issue in Dubai villas. Simply wiping it with a bleach solution is a temporary fix and won't address the moisture source.

The most effective DIY approach is to scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a diluted vinegar solution, but you must wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores. However, this only addresses visible growth. The hidden concern is moisture within the wall cavity, which in Dubai's climate can lead to widespread, unseen growth.

For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the extent of the moisture intrusion and assess the wall's condition. They can perform a moisture mapping assessment to see if the problem is isolated. Remediation often involves removing affected drywall or plaster, treating the cavity, and repairing with moisture-resistant materials before repainting.

To prevent recurrence, ensure the room's AC is serviced and draining properly, and consider using a dehumidifier in that room, as high indoor humidity from year-round AC use is a primary driver of mold growth here. Improving air circulation around the closet by leaving the door ajar can also help significantly.
