How to remove sand from marble floors without scratching?« Back to Previous Page

My villa’s ground floor has these beautiful marble floors, but after the last sandstorm, I keep finding fine scratches everywhere no matter how carefully we mop. It’s been driving me crazy for the past month, and I feel like I’m just grinding the sand in. What’s the best way to remove the sand and prevent these scratches without having to sweep and wet mop twice a day?

Sand is abrasive and will scratch marble with any back-and-forth motion. The key is to lift it, not grind it.

Stop dry sweeping or dust mopping immediately, as this acts like sandpaper. Instead, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove the bulk of the loose sand without abrasion. For daily maintenance, a microfiber dust mop used in a single direction (lifting it at the end of each stroke) will effectively pick up dust and fine sand without scratching.

For wet cleaning, use a well-wrung microfiber mop and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners like vinegar or lemon, as they will etch the marble's surface. Always flood the floor with cleaning solution and use the mop to push the liquid and suspended grit to a central point for collection, rather than a circular scrubbing motion.

To prevent the issue, place high-quality walk-off mats at every entrance. In Dubai's climate, with frequent sandstorms and AC running year-round, these mats are essential for trapping sand before it enters. Consider applying a professional-grade sealer to your marble floors; a good impregnating sealer can help fill the microscopic pores in the stone, making it harder for fine abrasive particles to become embedded and cause scratches during cleaning.

If the scratches are already deep, a professional stone restoration company can perform honing and polishing to restore the finish. For persistent problems, a professional assessment can identify if the current sealer has failed or if a different maintenance regimen is needed.
