How to safely clean black mold on villa wall?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a persistent, damp smell coming from the corner of the living room wall, right behind the sofa. I pulled the furniture out and saw a small patch of what looks like black mold on the lower part of the wall. This has definitely gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month. What's the best way to safely clean and treat this myself before it spreads further?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. The key is to never dry brush it, as this releases spores. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the mouldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne. Apply the vinegar solution directly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly with a fan. In Dubai's climate, the real challenge is addressing the moisture source. This wall is likely a "cold bridge" where condensation forms from the contrast between the humid outdoor air and the cold AC-cooled interior, a very common issue in villas here. If the mould returns within a few weeks or the affected area is larger, the moisture issue is likely behind the drywall. In that case, a professional inspection is needed to identify and rectify the root cause, as surface cleaning alone will be ineffective. For persistent or large-scale problems, a lab test can identify the mould species to confirm the best treatment protocol. |
