How to safely remove black mold from window grout?« Back to Previous Page

The grout in the tiles around our main living room windows has started turning black, and I'm worried my toddler is breathing in mold spores, especially since she's been sneezing more. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for five years, but this seems to have gotten much worse since the recent humidity. What's the best way to safely and permanently clean this without using harsh chemicals?

The black discoloration is likely mould growth, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity, condensation from AC units, and dust accumulation. For a toddler, even common moulds can irritate airways and exacerbate allergies, so addressing it is wise.
Start with a simple, non-toxic cleaning solution. Mix equal parts distilled white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray it generously onto the grout and let it sit for at least an hour to penetrate. For tougher growth, a paste made from baking soda and a small amount of water can be gently scrubbed onto the area with an old toothbrush. This combination is effective against many surface moulds and is safe for use around children and pets. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth. To prevent regrowth, the root cause must be addressed. This mould thrives on the condensation that forms where the cool interior meets the humid outdoor air. Ensure your AC is set to a temperature that minimizes this drastic temperature differential on the window frame. Improving air circulation in the room with a fan can also reduce stagnant, humid air pockets. After cleaning, consider applying a grout sealer to create a moisture-resistant barrier. If the black staining reappears quickly after cleaning or is widespread, the issue may be more extensive. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess if there is hidden moisture damage or a more persistent mould species. A lab analysis can identify the specific type of mould, which is the only way to confirm the actual risk level and determine the most effective, targeted treatment. |
