How to safely remove black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it seems to have appeared out of nowhere. What's the safest and most effective way for me to clean this myself, or is this something I absolutely need to call my building's maintenance for?

Depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) that appeared recently due to our high humidity, you can handle it safely yourself. If it covers a larger area or has returned after a previous cleaning, it indicates a persistent moisture source requiring professional assessment.

For a DIY clean, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and consider placing an old towel at the base to contain spores. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—vinegar is effective on many common molds in our climate. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dispose of all cleaning materials. Allow the area to dry completely; a fan can help.

The critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source. In a Dubai bedroom closet, this is often condensation from an AC supply vent inside the closet or an exterior wall cooling down. Ensure the closet is well-ventilated; leaving the door ajar can help. If the mold is on an exterior wall, it might be a building envelope issue your maintenance team should investigate, as it could be related to internal condensation or a rare leak.

If the mold returns quickly, smells musty, or you experience health symptoms, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the species and the extent of the issue.
