How to stop black mold in closet for good?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting black fuzzy mold on our leather bags and shoes. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai, and it's been fine for years, but this started right after the heavy humidity last month. I’m constantly running the dehumidifier but it’s not enough for that one spot. What’s the best way to treat this and stop it from coming back for good?

The black fuzzy mold is likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both common in Dubai due to high ambient humidity and exacerbated by recent heavy rains. The outside wall suggests a thermal bridge or minor water ingress is creating a localized cold spot where condensation forms, providing the moisture mold needs. Your dehumidifier lowers general humidity but cannot address this specific, persistent moisture source.
First, address the items. For leather, wipe affected areas with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water, then dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area. Do not use bleach. Discard any non-valuable, severely affected items to prevent spore spread. To stop recurrence, you must find and eliminate the moisture source. Inspect the exterior wall for cracks in the render or gaps around windows that may be allowing dampness in, especially after rain. Inside, check for condensation on the wall or cold surfaces within the closet. Improving air circulation is critical; consider installing a small, quiet exhaust fan in the closet or leaving the door ajar with a fan directed inside for several hours daily. Using moisture-absorbing products like silica gel desiccant bags can help, but they are a temporary aid, not a solution. For a permanent fix, a professional inspection is often needed. They use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location of the thermal bridging or moisture intrusion that isn't visible to the naked eye. Remediation involves sealing the exterior envelope and potentially adding internal insulation to that wall to prevent condensation. In many older Bur Dubai buildings, this is a recurrent issue that requires a targeted, building-specific approach rather than a generic cleaning. A certified inspector can provide a definitive diagnosis and remediation plan. |
