How to treat and prevent mold in a humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall facing the sea in Marina. I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped in there, especially with the AC not directly hitting that spot. What's the best way to treat this existing mold and what can I do to stop it from coming back, like a dehumidifier or something else?

The black mold in your closet is likely caused by trapped humid air condensing on the cooler interior wall, a common issue in Marina apartments. First, address the existing growth. For a small patch (under one square meter), wear a mask and gloves, then scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent or a specialized mold cleaner. Never just paint over it.
To prevent recurrence, you must reduce the moisture. A dehumidifier is a strong solution for a confined space like a closet. A smaller, more affordable desiccant dehumidifier can work well. More critically, improve air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar and consider installing louvered doors to allow the room's conditioned air to flow through. Ensure no wet items are stored inside. For a persistent problem on an exterior wall, the issue could be a deeper moisture intrusion or insufficient insulation. In many cases, a professional inspection is needed to identify the root cause, as the visible mold might only be a small part of the problem. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to check for hidden dampness within the wall cavity. |
