Is AC duct cleaning effective for dust and allergies?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa has been blowing out little bits of dust and I’ve started sneezing every time it kicks on. We had the filters changed a few months back but it didn’t help, and I just noticed a fine layer of grey dust settled on the vent in the master bedroom. Is getting the ducts cleaned actually effective for this, and how do I find a reputable company that won't just rip me off?

Yes, duct cleaning is often effective for reducing visible dust and allergy symptoms in Dubai's climate. The fine grey dust you're seeing is a classic sign of accumulated particulate in the ductwork. Changing the filter only stops new dust from entering; it doesn't remove the existing buildup inside the system, which gets stirred up and blown out every time the AC operates.

In the UAE, our year-round AC use and high ambient dust loads mean ducts fill up faster than in milder climates. This dust often contains a mix of sand, pollen, and degraded insulation fibres, which are common irritants. A thorough cleaning removes this reservoir, which can significantly reduce the particulate matter circulating in your air and lessen allergic reactions.

Finding a reputable company is crucial, as the industry has operators who perform ineffective "blow-and-go" services. Avoid companies that only show you clean vent covers as proof. A credible provider will use a truck-mounted HEPA-filtered vacuum system and agitation tools to dislodge debris. They should be able to provide before-and-after documentation, such as video scans of the ducts, to verify the work's effectiveness. Look for companies that follow NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) standards and ask if they can perform a pre-cleaning inspection to assess the level of contamination. For persistent issues, especially if a musty smell is present, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out mould, which requires a different remediation approach.
