Is AC duct dust causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual and I suspect it's because of the AC ducts in our villa in Al Barsha. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a fine layer of grey dust settling on everything again just a day after cleaning. Is this normal buildup for Dubai, or should I be looking for a professional duct cleaning service right away?

The grey dust settling in your villa is a common complaint in Dubai, particularly in areas like Al Barsha with high ambient dust. This is not normal household dust; it's a combination of fine sand, pollen, and particulate matter from construction that your AC system pulls in from outside. Year-round AC use means this buildup occurs continuously inside the ducts.
This dust accumulation can absolutely be an irritant causing your children's cough. The forced air from the AC blows these fine particles into your living space, where they are inhaled. For sensitive individuals, especially children, this can lead to throat irritation, persistent coughing, and worsened allergy symptoms. The high humidity here can also cause moisture to linger in the ductwork, allowing dust to clump and potentially fostering microbial growth, which is a separate irritant. Given your description—the rapid resettling of dust and the onset of coughing—a professional duct inspection is warranted. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and a buildup of this nature indicates the system is not filtering effectively. A proper duct cleaning service should use containment systems and HEPA vacuuming to remove the debris, not just dislodge it. After a thorough cleaning, you should notice an immediate reduction in airborne dust and a significant improvement in your children's symptoms. For long-term management, ensure your AC filters are upgraded to a higher MERV rating and are changed every 6-8 weeks, not just every few months. |
