Is AC smell causing my kids' headaches and cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been waking up with headaches and a dry cough for the past couple of weeks, and I’m starting to think it’s our AC. There's a weird, kind of dusty and sweet chemical smell that comes from the vents in our bedrooms, especially right after the unit kicks on in our Jumeirah Park villa. Could this smell be something like mold or freon leaking, and is it dangerous for us to be breathing it in every night?

The dusty, sweet chemical smell from your AC vents is likely a combination of microbial growth and accumulated dust, and it's very plausible this is causing your children's symptoms. In Dubai's climate, AC systems run constantly and pull in significant outdoor dust and humidity, creating an ideal environment for mould and bacteria to thrive in the ductwork and evaporator coils. The initial blast of air when the unit kicks on often carries the highest concentration of these particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can directly irritate the respiratory system, leading to morning headaches, dry coughs, and congestion.
While a Freon leak typically produces a faint, chloroform-like scent, it is far less common than microbial issues. The risk level depends entirely on the types and concentrations of contaminants present. For persistent symptoms, especially in children, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the source. A proper assessment should include a visual check of the evaporator coil and ductwork, and in many cases, an air or surface sample sent to an accredited microbiology lab can identify the specific species present and guide the correct remediation method, which is more effective than a standard cleaning. |
