Is air conditioning making dust storm allergies worse?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, my bedroom has been feeling increasingly stuffy and my son has started sneezing a lot more than usual. The carpets in there are definitely dusty but I’m not sure if that’s the source. Could the air conditioning be exacerbating it too?

Air conditioning can indeed make dust storm allergies worse. In Dubai and the UAE, where we experience intense dust storms, the air conditioner acts as a double-edged sword. On one hand, it helps filter out some airborne particles and keeps the temperature comfortable. However, if not properly maintained, your AC system can actually spread dust throughout your home, exacerbating allergy symptoms like sneezing.

The problem with AC units in dusty environments is that they can accumulate a lot of dirt and dust over time. During maintenance checks, technicians often find debris and mold growth inside the ducts and filters. When the AC runs, it circulates this dust around your living space. In your case, if the air conditioning system hasn't been cleaned since last week's dust storm, there’s a high chance that it has re-circulated some of the dust into your bedroom.

To address this, you should consider having an inspection done by professionals to ensure both your AC and carpets are clean. The UAE doesn’t have specific regulations for residential air conditioning maintenance but it is wise to follow industry standards which recommend cleaning every 6 months or after significant environmental changes like a dust storm.

For immediate relief, try these steps:
1. Change the air filter in your AC system. Even if you replace it regularly, dust storms might necessitate an extra change.
2. Clean your carpets and curtains using steam cleaning methods to remove embedded dirt and allergens.
3. Use HEPA filters for your air purifiers or integrate them into your AC units; they can trap tiny particles that regular filters miss.

If the problem persists despite these measures, it may be time to call in a professional service provider such as Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They can offer more thorough inspections and treatments if necessary.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial for allergy sufferers, especially during dusty periods in the UAE. Keeping your AC clean and regularly servicing it will go a long way in managing those pesky sneezes!
