Is black mould in my child's bedroom dangerous in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual lately, and I’ve just noticed a patch of black mould forming in the corner of their bedroom, behind the wardrobe. It must have been growing there for a while, hidden from view. With the humidity levels rising again, I’m really worried about their health. What's the best way to safely and permanently remove mould in a child's bedroom here in Dubai?

Black mould in a child's bedroom is a significant health concern, particularly in Dubai. The combination of high humidity and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for mould growth, which often occurs in hidden areas with poor air circulation, like behind furniture.

The primary risk is to respiratory health. Mould spores can cause persistent coughing, worsen allergies, and trigger asthma attacks, especially in children whose systems are more sensitive. While not all black mould is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, any visible growth indicates a moisture problem and should be addressed promptly.

For a small, visible patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply wiping the surface is rarely a permanent fix in our climate. The root cause is excess moisture, often from condensation due to temperature differences, a small leak, or inadequate ventilation.

To remove it permanently, you must identify and rectify the source of the moisture. This often requires a professional inspection to assess humidity levels and airflow in the room. They can determine if the issue is related to the AC system's drainage, insufficient insulation on cold walls, or general room ventilation. After solving the moisture issue, the affected area must be properly cleaned, and any porous materials like damaged drywall or insulation may need to be removed and replaced to prevent regrowth. For the health of your children, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to ensure the mould is remediated safely and completely.
