Is construction dust causing our coughs?« Back to Previous Page
|
After the recent construction next door, my kids and I have been experiencing persistent coughs and nasal congestion. The dust seems to be coming through our open windows, especially during windy days. We’ve lived in this apartment complex for two years, but never had these issues before. Has anyone else experienced similar problems, or could it be the construction causing these symptoms?

Construction dust sure can be a pesky issue, especially in areas like Dubai where big projects seem to happen all the time. It's really not uncommon for people living nearby to experience coughs and other respiratory issues during such times. The regulations here are pretty strict about controlling dust, but sometimes it slips through.
In the UAE, there is the Federal Decree-Law No. 16 of 2019 on Building Construction, which sets out guidelines for construction sites, including measures to control dust and ensure public health isn't compromised. However, even with these laws, if a site hasn’t been properly managed or if winds are particularly strong, dust can find its way into nearby residential areas. Given your situation, it's quite possible that the construction next door could be causing those coughs. The dust you're seeing through open windows is a clear sign that something isn't being controlled as well as it should be. This type of issue has been reported before by other residents in similar circumstances. If this continues or worsens, I'd strongly advise getting a professional inspection done. At Saniservice, we offer such services and can help you identify if the dust is indeed the culprit and to what extent. Our team will come over to check your home for any signs of elevated pollutants and ensure that your indoor air quality meets acceptable standards. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to mitigate the effects: 1. Keep windows closed during windy days or when construction activity is high. 2. Use air purifiers with HEPA filters in your rooms. 3. Consider wet mopping or using a damp cloth to clean surfaces inside your home. 4. If possible, use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture which dust can thrive on. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount.
