Is damp smell from AC linked to duct issues?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange damp smell lingering in our living room. It's especially noticeable when we run the AC, and it seems to stick around even after airing out the space. The kids have been coughing more frequently lately too. Could this be related to duct issues? Should we consider having them cleaned?

Absolutely, the damp smell from your AC can indeed be linked to duct issues. In Dubai and UAE conditions where we experience periodic rains, it's quite common for moisture to accumulate within air conditioning ductwork, especially if there are leaks or inadequate sealing of joints. This trapped moisture can lead to growth of mold and mildew which might explain the damp smell you're noticing, particularly when running the AC.

Given that your kids have been coughing more frequently, this could very well be a symptom of an indoor air quality issue. Infections from airborne particles like spores and dust mites are common in such cases, especially if the air isn't being properly filtered or circulated.

It’s important to address this as soon as possible to ensure your family's health and comfort. Ductwork that hasn't been cleaned for a while might be harbouring not just moisture but also other contaminants like dust, pollen, pet dander, and even bacteria. These can exacerbate respiratory issues in children and adults alike.

I strongly recommend you schedule an inspection with a professional service to check your ducts. In Dubai, companies specializing in HVAC maintenance are well-versed with local regulations such as those set forth by the Environment and Sustainability Agency (ESA). They will be able to assess the condition of your ductwork and recommend cleaning or repairs if necessary.

When calling for a service, ask about their adherence to UAE standards like those from ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) guidelines which are quite stringent in terms of air quality and safety.

Lastly, after the inspection, you might also consider an air quality test to determine if there’s any presence of mold or other harmful substances that require remediation. A company like Saniservice can provide these services. For more information on their offerings, do call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.

Remember, addressing this now could prevent bigger issues down the line and ensure a healthier indoor environment for your family.
