Is damp smell from vent due to mold?« Back to Previous Page

Since the heavy rains a few weeks ago, I've noticed a persistent damp smell in the corner of our living room where the air vent is. My kids have been complaining of coughing fits especially after we turn on the AC. Could this be due to mold or poor ventilation? What should I do to ensure it’s safe for my family?

It's quite possible the damp smell coming from your living room air vent is indeed due to mold. Mold thrives in moist environments and can develop quickly after periods of heavy rain as you've experienced. The symptoms reported by your kids such as coughing fits are common when exposed to mold spores.

In Dubai, like many areas, we're no strangers to humidity, but the recent rainfall could have exacerbated conditions leading to a potential mold issue. Mold not only impacts air quality but can also cause respiratory issues, especially in children and those with preexisting health conditions.

Given your concerns, it's highly recommended that you get a professional inspection. In the UAE, regulations such as those outlined in the Building Code of Dubai (BCD) emphasize proper ventilation systems and moisture management to prevent mold growth. You can call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an assessment.

In the meantime, ensure good air circulation by opening windows if possible and using dehumidifiers around affected areas. Check for any leaks near the vent and address them promptly. Regularly clean your HVAC system to prevent mold from developing within it.

Remember, keeping indoor environments dry is key in preventing mold growth. If you notice persistent moisture or increased mold growth, act quickly as prolonged exposure can lead to serious health issues.
