Is damp smell in hallway a cleaning issue?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a persistent damp smell coming from the hallway that connects my bedroom to the living room. It’s concerning because we’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now. The carpet in that area is quite thick, and I’m unsure if it’s part of our cleaning responsibilities or if something else might be causing this issue. Have any of you experienced similar problems in a rental property?

Damp smell in hallway could be more than just a cleaning issue. It might indicate underlying moisture problems which are common in rental properties especially after heavy rains. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, humidity levels can rise leading to such smells even when cleaning is done regularly.

Firstly, it's good that you've noticed this now as it gives us time to address the situation before it worsens. However, given the thick carpet and persistent smell over two years, I recommend getting a professional inspection. This will help identify if there are any underlying issues like water seepage or mold growth which could be causing the problem.

In Dubai, according to Building Regulations (E2), landlords have responsibilities to ensure properties are in good condition but tenants also have obligations to maintain them properly. If you suspect that the issue is due to your landlord's failure to maintain the property, you should document everything - take photos and note down dates of when you first noticed the smell.

For now, there are some steps you can take on your own:
1. Ensure good ventilation in the hallway by opening windows or using a dehumidifier.
2. Check for any visible signs of water damage around pipes, walls or ceilings.
3. Clean the carpet thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before use. You might want to consider professional carpet cleaning services for this.
4. If you find moisture under the carpet, gently lift some sections to check if there's any dampness or mold.

Remember, if the smell persists despite your efforts, call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional assessment and remediation. Early detection can prevent costly repairs down the line.

Lastly, always keep lines of communication open with your landlord regarding such issues to ensure prompt action is taken.
