Is desert dust harming our health?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new home a few months ago, which is close to a construction site on one side and surrounded by vast desert dunes, I’ve noticed an unusual dust cloud forming outside my bedroom window every evening. The air feels thick and gritty when I wake up in the morning, even with the AC running. My kids have been complaining of sore throats and persistent coughing. Could this be related to the desert dust, or should we be concerned about its health effects?

Desert dust can indeed be harmful to your health, especially in the UAE and Dubai. The region's unique climate and geographic location make it a perfect environment for these fine particles to form and travel through the air. In our area, desert dust often carries a mix of sand, soil, and pollutants from construction sites, vehicles, and industrial activities.

The dust you've noticed forming outside your bedroom window each evening is likely a combination of local desert sands blown by prevailing winds and possibly some particulate matter from nearby construction work. This can certainly be irritating to the respiratory system, leading to sore throats, coughing, and other discomforts in your kids and possibly even in adults.

The UAE does have regulations concerning air quality, but dust events can sometimes exceed these standards. For instance, The Environmental Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) monitors particulate matter levels and issues alerts when necessary. However, it's not uncommon for short-term spikes to occur due to natural and human activities.

Given the symptoms your family is experiencing, I would recommend scheduling a professional indoor environmental inspection. This can help determine if desert dust or other factors are contributing to your air quality concerns. We at Saniservice can provide comprehensive testing, analysis, and remediation services tailored for Dubai's unique conditions. In the meantime, here are a few tips to mitigate discomfort:
1. Use high-efficiency filters in your air conditioning systems to trap fine particles.
2. Keep windows and doors closed during dust events.
3. Encourage family members to use saline nasal sprays and over-the-counter cough suppressants if needed.
4. Stay hydrated as this can help soothe the throat.

Remember, while these measures can offer temporary relief, a professional assessment is key to ensuring long-term comfort and health in your home environment.
