Is dirty AC coil causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual at night, especially in their bedrooms, and I'm worried it's because of the AC. I just checked the unit in the master bedroom and the coils look absolutely caked in dust and grime. We've been in this villa in Al Barsha for three years and I don't think it's ever been done properly.
How urgently do I need to get a professional coil cleaning service, and is it safe for the kids to stay in the house while it's being done?

Dirty AC coils are a very likely contributor to your kids' nighttime coughing, especially given Dubai's climate. The dust and grime caked on the coils create an ideal environment for mould and bacteria to thrive, which are then blown directly into the room. This is extremely common after three years without service in a villa, as year-round AC use combined with high humidity and fine dust means coils get dirty much faster than in milder climates.
You should arrange for a professional cleaning soon. The risk isn't an immediate emergency, but prolonged exposure to the biofilms growing on those coils can consistently irritate respiratory systems, particularly in children. The process itself is safe for occupants. Technicians isolate the unit, and the cleaning involves vacuuming, specialized brushing, and applying coil-safe solutions that break down the organic matter. The area will need ventilation during the process, but your family does not need to leave the house. For a case with visible buildup and health symptoms, a standard cleaning may not be enough. The microbial growth might have penetrated deeper into the system. After the physical cleaning, consider a diagnostic test. A surface swab sent to an independent lab can identify exactly what allergens or irritants were present, which confirms the cause and helps assess if further disinfection is needed. This is the most definitive way to know you've addressed the root of the problem. |
