Is dirty AC duct causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual lately and I'm starting to suspect the air quality. I just changed the AC filters in our Jumeirah villa but when I peeked inside the vent, I could see a thick layer of dust built up on the sides. We've been here for three years and I don't think the ducts have ever been cleaned. How urgent is it to get the ducts professionally cleaned in this situation, and could this actually be causing their allergies?

Dirty AC ducts are a very likely contributor to your kids' cough, especially given the three-year timeframe and visible dust buildup. Dubai's high ambient dust and year-round AC use create a perfect environment for ducts to accumulate significant particulate matter, mould spores, and other allergens. When the system operates, it can blast these irritants directly into your living spaces.

For a family in a villa with pre-existing allergies, this is a high-priority issue. The Dubai Municipality's guidelines recommend regular maintenance of AC systems to ensure indoor air quality, though they don't specify a duct cleaning frequency. In a climate with our humidity levels, dust accumulation inside ducts can also trap moisture, leading to mould growth that isn't always visible from the vent.

Start with a professional inspection. A reputable provider will use a borescope to visually assess the contamination deep inside the ductwork, beyond what you can see from the vent. This inspection can confirm the severity and identify if mould is present. If significant buildup is found, a proper duct cleaning using HEPA-filtered extraction equipment can measurably reduce the allergen load in your air.

While changing filters is excellent, it only stops new dust from entering the unit; it doesn't address the reservoir of existing dust in the ducts. Given your children's symptoms and the visible dust, an assessment is a prudent next step to identify the cause.
