Is dirty AC duct cleaning urgent for child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual lately and I’m starting to suspect the AC vents. I was changing the filter in our villa in Arabian Ranches yesterday and could see a fair bit of dust built up around the vent openings. We’ve lived here for almost three years and I don’t think the ducts have ever been cleaned. Is this something I need to get sorted immediately, or can it wait a few months?

Dusty AC ducts can certainly contribute to coughing, especially in children whose airways are more sensitive. In Dubai's climate, with year-round AC use, ducts accumulate a mix of fine desert dust, pollen, and moisture, creating an environment where irritants and microbial growth can thrive.
For a three-year-old system with visible dust at the vents and a child showing symptoms, a professional inspection is advisable. The urgency isn't emergency-level, but it shouldn't be postponed for several months. The inspector will use a borescope to assess contamination levels deep inside the ducts, not just at the openings. This visual evidence is key to determining if cleaning is necessary. Look for a provider that offers documented proof of contamination before any work begins and verification after. The process should include cleaning the main trunk lines, branch ducts, and the plenum, followed by a new high-quality filter. Proper cleaning can significantly reduce the dust and allergen load circulating in your home, which in many cases helps alleviate irritation-related coughing. Avoid companies that offer a quick, cheap spray-down without before-and-after evidence; this is a common reason for consumer skepticism in the market. |
