Is dirty ductwork causing our family's health issues?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment two months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent musty smell coming from the bedroom closet near the air ducts. My son has been complaining of a cough that won’t seem to go away, and my daughter’s allergies have gotten much worse since moving in. Could this be related to dirty air ducts? What should we do about it?

Absolutely, dirty ductwork can indeed be the culprit behind your family's health issues. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, high humidity and dust levels can exacerbate indoor air quality problems which might be contributing to the musty smell you're experiencing and your children’s symptoms.

The air ducts in your apartment could be harbouring a significant amount of dust, mold spores, pet dander, and other allergens. These contaminants can get trapped over time and when your HVAC system runs, these particles are recirculated into your living space. This might explain why your son has developed a persistent cough and your daughter’s allergies have worsened.

In the UAE context, it's important to know that building codes and regulations may not be as stringent regarding ductwork maintenance compared to some other regions. However, ensuring clean air is crucial for maintaining good indoor environmental quality and protecting occupant health.

For a thorough assessment of your ductwork, I highly recommend contacting a professional environmental inspection company like ours. We can conduct a comprehensive inspection to identify any issues such as mold growth or excessive dust accumulation. Based on our findings, we'll provide you with appropriate solutions.

In the meantime, here are some tips for temporary relief:
1. Increase ventilation by opening windows when possible.
2. Use HEPA filters in your HVAC system if they're not already installed.
3. Consider using an air purifier to help filter out airborne particles.
4. Keep pets' hair and dander at bay by regular cleaning.

Please don't hesitate to reach out for a consultation or service, you can call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We're here to help ensure your family's health is not compromised due to poor indoor air quality.

Remember, maintaining clean ductwork isn't just about preventing smells; it’s also crucial for avoiding serious respiratory issues and allergies, especially in a climate like Dubai’s.
