Is duct cleaning dangerous in my home?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a layer of fine grayish powder settling on everything inside my apartment. This is in the master bedroom, which has a central AC unit. Given that we’ve lived here for two years without any cleaning, could this be due to old ducts needing attention? What signs should I look out for that might indicate if our air ducts need cleaning and how often should they typically be serviced?

Duct cleaning isn't inherently dangerous but it does need to be done properly to avoid complications. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, our climate and frequent sandstorms can make this a critical issue for indoor air quality.

When dust storms kick up, they can introduce a significant amount of fine particulates into the atmosphere that then get pulled into your ductwork. This explains why you noticed the fine grayish powder settling on everything inside your master bedroom. Given the central AC unit in there, it's quite possible that this is indeed due to old or neglected ducts.

Indications that your air ducts might need cleaning include:
• Unusual dust levels in your home
• Persistent mold odors
• A noticeable decrease in airflow from vents
• Allergies worsening despite regular maintenance

In the UAE, it's advisable to have a professional inspection every 3-5 years. This is because the harsh climate and frequent sandstorms can lead to more rapid accumulation of debris and contaminants within the ducts. Regular inspections can catch issues early before they become problematic.

If you're concerned or notice any concerning signs, i recommend having your system inspected by a certified professional. At SaniService, we offer comprehensive duct cleaning services that adhere to local regulations like those set forth by the Dubai Municipality.
