Is ductwork related to family's symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy smoke from construction next door cleared a few weeks ago, I’ve noticed a persistent odor in our living room that’s quite unpleasant. My daughter has also started complaining of itchy eyes and a cough, which worries me because she doesn’t have allergies usually. Could this be related to the ductwork in our apartment? What should we do about it?

Ductwork can indeed be linked to the symptoms your family has been experiencing. In Dubai and the UAE, regulations regarding indoor air quality are quite stringent; however, construction activities and subsequent smoke events can introduce particulates into your living space which may find their way through the ductwork.

The persistent odor you've noticed could very well be related to the ducting in your apartment. Over time, dust, debris, mold spores, and other allergens can accumulate within the ducts, especially after a construction event like the one next door. This accumulation can lead to odors and poor indoor air quality which might affect your health, particularly your daughter's respiratory issues.

Given that you're noticing these symptoms in your living room and your daughter is complaining of itchy eyes and coughing, it would be prudent to have the ductwork inspected by a professional. The UAE has specific standards for HVAC systems and indoor air quality, ensuring they meet certain criteria for cleanliness and functionality.

You might want to consider calling 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 (Saniservice) for an inspection. They can help assess the condition of your ducts, clean them if necessary, and provide recommendations on maintaining good indoor air quality moving forward.

In addition to professional cleaning, you could also consider installing a HEPA filter in your HVAC system to trap fine particles that may have made their way into your home. Regular maintenance of your entire HVAC system can prevent such issues from arising in the future.

Remember, keeping an eye on indoor air quality is crucial for maintaining good health, especially with children who might be more susceptible to irritants and allergens. By taking these steps, you can ensure a healthier living environment for yourself and your family.
