Is dust from construction harming my children?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent construction next door, my children's rooms have been filled with a fine dust that settles everywhere. Even though we keep the windows closed, it’s still getting inside our apartment. My kids have been coughing more frequently since then, especially in the mornings when they first wake up. Could this dust be causing their symptoms?

Absolutely, the dust from construction can most definitely be causing those pesky symptoms your children are experiencing. In Dubai and the UAE, it's quite common to encounter such issues following nearby building projects. The fine particulate matter that results from construction activities can easily penetrate even closed windows and settle on surfaces within your home.

The UAE has some stringent regulations when it comes to air quality and dust control during construction (check out Decree-Law No. 15 of 2018 on Environment Protection in the UAE). However, sometimes these measures may not be fully adhered to or might not cover all aspects of airborne particulates that can affect indoor environments.

Given your situation, I would highly recommend having an independent professional inspection done. These experts will use advanced equipment like particle counters and air samplers to assess the current levels of dust in your apartment. They'll also provide a detailed report on any remediation steps needed to ensure your home is safe for you and your family.

In the meantime, here are some practical tips:
• Use HEPA filters in air purifiers that can capture tiny particles
• Install doormats at all entry points to minimize dust brought inside
• Encourage everyone to remove their shoes before entering the house
• Dust surfaces regularly with a damp cloth or electrostatic duster

If your children's symptoms persist, it may be wise to consult a pediatrician as well. They can help rule out other possible causes and advise on necessary treatments.
