Is dust from neighbor's construction harming my kids?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent construction next door, I’ve noticed a persistent dust cloud floating around our living room whenever the windows are open. My kids have been complaining of itchy eyes and coughing more often lately, especially when they come home from school. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this issue recently. Could this be affecting their health, and what can we do to improve the indoor air quality?

The dust from your neighbor's construction could definitely be causing discomfort and might even impact the indoor air quality of your home. Dust particles can contain allergens like pollen, mold spores, and other irritants which are common triggers for respiratory issues among children. In Dubai, as per the UAE Environment Agency regulations (UAE EA), there are standards in place to control dust emissions from construction sites, but it's possible that if they haven't been followed strictly, dust could have blown into your home.

Firstly, you should definitely call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. A certified indoor air quality expert can help determine the source and extent of the problem and recommend appropriate measures to mitigate it. They may suggest installing air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters which are highly effective in capturing fine dust particles and allergens, especially from sources such as construction activity.

Meanwhile, there are several steps you can take to improve indoor air quality on your own:

1. Keep windows closed as much as possible, especially during windy days or when the neighbor’s work is at its peak.
2. Use a portable HEPA air purifier in the areas where your kids spend most of their time—like the living room and bedrooms.
3. Regularly clean dust from surfaces using damp cloths to prevent it from getting airborne. This can help reduce indoor particulate matter.
4. Encourage your children to wash hands and face after coming home, as this can also help remove external allergens.

It’s important not to ignore these symptoms in your kids. Persistent eye irritation and coughing could indicate an allergic reaction or respiratory issue that might worsen over time without proper management. The UAE Environment Agency (UAE EA) does recommend regular indoor air quality checks for residential areas, so getting a professional evaluation is crucial.

Remember, while you can take steps to improve the air quality in your home, addressing the source of the dust—your neighbor’s construction site—is also important. You might consider speaking with them about their dust control practices or contacting the local municipality if the issue persists and affects more than just your family.

Stay proactive about these issues for the health and wellbeing of your children!
