Is dust from sandstorm harmful to health?« Back to Previous Page

After the sandstorm last week, I noticed a fine dust settling on every surface in the living room. It’s really piling up, even with the windows closed. My kids have been coughing more than usual too. Can someone advise if this is normal and how best to manage it myself or do we need professional help?

Yes, desert dust from sandstorms can indeed be harmful to your health, especially in the UAE. In Dubai and other parts of the Emirates, such storms are common, particularly during certain seasons like spring when dry winds pick up fine particles of sand and dust.

The dust you've noticed on surfaces and the increased coughing by your kids could be due to higher levels of airborne particulate matter from the recent sandstorm. These particles can contain harmful substances like silica, metals, or even bacteria and viruses, which can irritate respiratory systems leading to coughs, sneezes, and other symptoms.

In Dubai, according to local environmental regulations, it's important to ensure your indoor environment remains as clean and safe as possible during such events. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) advises on ways to minimize exposure to dust from sandstorms.

To manage the situation yourself, start by cleaning regularly with a damp cloth or mop to avoid stirring up more dust into the air. Use HEPA filters in your air purifiers if you have them as they can capture fine particles. Keeping windows and doors closed tight during high winds is also key.

If symptoms persist or worsen, it might be wise to seek professional help. A company like ours at Saniservice can perform a thorough indoor air quality inspection to assess the levels of dust and other contaminants, ensuring your home stays as healthy an environment as possible.

Remember, while these measures are effective, they may not always suffice when faced with severe storms. Professional advice could be invaluable in such situations, so don't hesitate to contact us if you're concerned about the air quality or need additional assistance.
