Is dust from storm harmful to kids?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a cloud of fine dirt swirling around in our living room. It’s unsettling to think about my children playing there, especially since their coughs have been acting up lately. The AC vents seemed particularly dusty this time. Could this be from the ducts? What should I do about it?

Dust from storms can indeed be harmful to kids and others in the household. In the UAE, especially during dust events like those we've experienced recently, fine particles suspended in the air can include a variety of contaminants such as sand, pollen, and even microorganisms. These tiny particulates can easily enter your home through open windows or even via HVAC systems.

In Dubai/UAE, the health effects of airborne dust are well-documented. Fine particles, also known as PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 micrometers), can irritate the respiratory system and exacerbate conditions like asthma and bronchitis. For children, who have smaller airways, this risk is even greater.

Considering your concerns about your children's coughs, it’s important to consider the possibility that dust from the recent storms could be causing or contributing to their symptoms. Additionally, if the AC vents are particularly dusty, it suggests that particles might indeed be making their way through the ductwork and into your living spaces.

It would be wise to have a professional inspection of your HVAC system to ensure there isn't any significant accumulation of dust in the ducts that could be affecting air quality. In Dubai, local regulations emphasize the importance of maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) for public health. Regular maintenance of HVAC systems is crucial, and cleaning or replacing filters can help improve IAQ.
