Is dust storm-related duct issues common?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last month, I noticed a significant amount of dust accumulating in the vents of my living room. The AC unit also seemed to be working much harder than usual, and there was an odd, musty smell that never really went away. Could this be related to poor ductwork cleaning? What steps should I take to clean or maintain my ducts properly to prevent this from happening again?

Yes, dust storm-related duct issues can be quite common. In the UAE, especially during stormy seasons, heavy winds and sandstorms can easily kick up a lot of particulate matter which then gets carried into your home's ventilation system through open windows or even via the AC units. These particulates end up in your ductwork and can accumulate over time.

In Dubai, where we experience such storms, it’s not uncommon to see increased dust levels due to the region’s climate conditions. This is particularly noticeable after a storm as you've experienced with more dust appearing in vents and an increase in AC usage which might be due to decreased air quality or clogged ducts hindering airflow.

Now, regarding maintenance, it's really important to keep your ductwork clean to ensure optimal performance of your HVAC system. Dust and debris can not only affect the efficiency but also lead to discomfort like musty odors. In Dubai’s climate, these issues are compounded by high humidity levels which can promote mold growth if there’s any moisture trapped in the ducts.

For a thorough cleaning, it's advisable to call in professionals who specialize in this area, as they have the right tools and techniques. Companies like Saniservice offer services specifically tailored for UAE conditions, including dust storm aftermath cleanups. They can provide both preventive maintenance plans and emergency cleanup after storms.

If you decide to tackle some basic maintenance yourself, it’s wise to start by cleaning or replacing air filters regularly (every 3-6 months is typical). Also, ensure that any exterior vents are properly sealed to prevent sand and dust from entering your system. Professional inspections every few years can also help identify issues before they become major problems.

Remember, if you notice persistent odors, unusual noises, or see an increase in energy bills despite having the AC set at a normal temperature, it might be time for a professional inspection. Don't hesitate to reach out to 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for assistance.
