Is dusty AC vent causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot more than usual, and I'm starting to worry it's because of the AC ducts in our villa in Al Barsha. I just peeked inside one of the vents and it's absolutely caked with thick, grey dust. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned out immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

That level of visible dust buildup is a very likely contributor to your children's persistent coughs. The grey, caked material is a combination of fine desert sand and organic debris that, when circulated by the AC, acts as a persistent respiratory irritant.

In Dubai's climate, with year-round AC use and high humidity, this dust layer inside the ductwork often harbors moisture and can become a breeding ground for mold spores and bacteria, which significantly worsens indoor air quality. The constant recirculation of this contaminated air directly impacts respiratory health, especially in children.

You should arrange for a professional inspection and cleaning. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as this can disturb the dust and cause a larger, more concentrated release of pollutants into your home's air. A proper cleaning involves specialized equipment like HEPA-filtered vacuums and agitation tools to safely contain and remove the debris. For a villa in Al Barsha with visible contamination and occupants experiencing symptoms, this qualifies as a priority. While waiting a few days for a qualified technician is acceptable, I would not delay beyond that. Look for a provider that can document the before-and-after state of your ducts, as this verifies the job was done thoroughly.
