Is dusty AC vent making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past week, and I'm starting to think it's our AC vents. I noticed a thick layer of greyish dust coating the bedroom vents when I changed the filter yesterday. Is this normal Dubai dust or could it be something worse that's making us sick? What's the best way to get the air ducts in a villa professionally cleaned?

That greyish dust coating your vents is likely a combination of fine desert sand and organic debris, which creates an ideal habitat for microbial growth in Dubai's humidity. The constant AC operation means this contaminated dust is being circulated directly into your bedroom air, which can absolutely cause the persistent coughing you're describing.

While normal dust might cause minor irritation, the dampness from our high humidity allows mold spores and bacteria to thrive in that debris. Children are particularly susceptible to these airborne irritants. The Dubai Municipality recommends regular AC and duct maintenance for villas, specifically because stagnant moisture in ducts becomes a breeding ground for biological contaminants.

For proper duct cleaning, avoid companies that only do a superficial vacuuming. A reputable service will use a truck-mounted HEPA filtration system to create negative pressure within your ductwork, then agitate and extract debris from the entire system. They should provide before-and-after documentation, ideally with photographic or video evidence from inside the ducts.

Given the symptoms, consider requesting a professional inspection that includes surface sampling of that dust. A lab analysis can identify if problematic mold species or elevated allergen levels are present, which confirms whether the duct contamination is the likely culprit for your family's health issues.
