Is dusty smell harming my family's health?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new home a few months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent dusty smell in the living room, especially after rainy days. The condition seems to worsen when my children play there, as if it’s making their coughing and sneezing worse too. Could this be due to poor ventilation or some other indoor air quality issue? What steps should I take to improve the air quality for my family's health?

Is dusty smell harming my family's health?

The dusty smell and the coughing/sneezing your children have are serious concerns. It could be due to poor ventilation, dust mites, mold, or other allergens that thrive in high humidity conditions like those after rainy days. In Dubai/UAE, the climate can indeed contribute to these issues more than you might think.

Firstly, it's important to assess if there is a mold issue. Mold growth thrives in moist environments and can produce spores that irritate the respiratory system leading to coughing, sneezing, and other allergic reactions. In the UAE, we are subject to strict regulations regarding indoor air quality, including those from EN 13788:2009 which sets out requirements for mold growth in buildings.

You should inspect your living room carefully for signs of dampness or water damage, especially near windows or where pipes pass through walls. If you find any, take immediate action to dry it out and prevent further mold growth.

To improve indoor air quality, start by ensuring proper ventilation. Open windows when the weather allows but use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove moisture. You can also consider installing an HVAC system with a high-efficiency filter to capture airborne particles and allergens.

Using dehumidifiers or air purifiers can be very effective in reducing dust and mold spores. In Dubai, where humidity levels can spike, these devices are particularly beneficial. Regularly cleaning your home using HEPA filters for vacuum cleaners is also crucial.

Professional inspection might be necessary if the issue persists. At Saniservice, we offer professional indoor air quality assessments that follow UAE regulations and standards.
