Is grey dust and throat irritation from mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be running non-stop since the heat wave hit, but now there’s a weird grey dust settling on everything. My throat has started to feel itchy and scratchy, especially when I wake up, and my kids have been complaining of coughing fits at night. Could this be from mold or something else in the air? What should we do to clean and check for potential health hazards?

Grey dust and throat irritation could indeed be linked to mold growth. In the UAE, particularly during extreme heat waves like what we've been experiencing, increased humidity levels can create an ideal environment for molds to thrive. This is especially true if your air conditioning system isn't properly maintained or is running 24/7.
Molds are common in our region and can cause a range of health issues, including itchy throats, coughing fits, and even more severe symptoms depending on the individual's sensitivity. It’s quite possible that what you're experiencing could be mold related. However, before jumping to conclusions, it would be wise to have your apartment inspected by professionals who are familiar with the UAE-specific regulations. In Dubai, local laws and guidelines for indoor air quality might not require frequent inspections, but given the current conditions, a professional inspection is highly recommended. This will help identify if there's indeed mold present and determine its extent. The team would also be able to advise on how to clean it up safely and prevent further growth. For immediate relief, you could start by cleaning surfaces with a mixture of water and bleach or vinegar (both are effective against molds). Make sure to wear protective gear like gloves and masks when doing so. However, if the situation doesn't improve after cleaning, contact an expert for thorough inspection and remediation. Remember, professional help is crucial as improper handling can spread spores further.
