Is humid wall growth normal near sea-facing balconies?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy storms we had last week, I noticed a slimy substance growing along the base of the wall near our front door. It looks like algae or mold and seems to be spreading faster than before. The area is right by the sea-facing balcony, which gets quite humid even on non-rainy days. Has anyone else experienced this issue and how can we prevent it from recurring?

Yes, humid wall growth near sea-facing balconies is pretty common in the UAE, especially areas like Dubai where we experience high humidity and coastal breezes. The issue you're describing sounds like it could be due to algae or mold thriving from moisture accumulation. This situation isn't uncommon at all, but it can cause some serious concerns if left unchecked.

Firstly, make sure the balcony area is well-ventilated. Open windows whenever possible to allow air flow and reduce moisture levels. If the area gets too humid even when there's no rain, consider installing a dehumidifier or exhaust fan in your balcony space. This can help lower humidity significantly and prevent mold from growing.

Cleaning the affected walls with a solution of water and detergent can be effective. For algae specifically, adding one tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water may do the trick to remove stubborn growth. Be sure to wear protective gloves and goggles when cleaning as some chemicals might irritate your skin or eyes.

If you notice the issue persisting despite these efforts, it's highly recommended that you call in a professional for inspection and remediation. In the UAE, companies like Saniservice (you can contact them at 800-MOLDS or hello@saniservice.com) specialize in such issues and can offer more advanced solutions to ensure your home remains safe.

Moreover, check if your building complies with local regulations. The Dubai Municipality has strict rules about maintaining indoor environmental quality which might be applicable here. Make sure that any remediation work adheres to these guidelines for long-term effectiveness.

Remember, keeping an eye on the issue and taking proactive steps is key. Don't ignore it; address it promptly to avoid potential health hazards and costly repairs down the line.
